The CARE Chemistry lecture class provides 6 credits for CARE and 6 CE Hours for NCBTMB.

INTENDED LEARNING OBJECTIVES

This comprehensive CARE Chemistry class goes beyond basic aromatherapy, offering a deep dive into the scientific and energetic properties of essential oils. By the end of this course, you'll be able to:

Recognize and appreciate the intelligent design of the universe at a molecular level.
Explain why the same essential oil can evoke different responses from different people.
Discuss how both chemistry and quantum physics are necessary to explain oil behavior.
List four distinct ways that essential oil molecules can enter our bodies.
Describe the three basic schools of aromatherapy.
Recognize the fallacies often associated with the British school of aromatherapy.
Articulate compelling reasons why trace compounds are crucial to an oil’s full therapeutic value.
Explain how molecular weight directly relates to an oil's viscosity, volatility, and biological half-life.
Answer why the Periodic Table is "periodic" in its organization.
Discuss the fundamental structure of atoms and molecules as elements and compounds.
Identify the five principal elements that comprise essential oils.
Explain what chiral molecules are and provide relevant examples.
Talk about the history of benzene, understand the benzene ring, and discuss its existence as an energy form.

Preparation

While not required, it is helpful to have your own copy of "The Chemistry of Essential Oils Made Simple" by David Stewart for this class.
